The Dirty Truth: How Often Should You REALLY Wash Your Hair?

The Dirty Truth: How Often Should You Wash Your Hair? | Runway Blowout Lounge

Clients ask me this all the time: “Maria, how often should I be washing my hair?” Honestly, the answer isn’t the same for everyone. At Runway Blowout Lounge, we see all types of hair and scalps—from oily to dry to everything in between. Let’s break down what really works so you can stop second-guessing your wash days.

Why Washing Frequency Matters

Your scalp produces natural oils that keep your hair soft and protected. Wash too often, and you strip those oils away, leaving hair dry and brittle. Don’t wash enough, and buildup can suffocate your scalp, leading to flakes, dullness, or even breakouts. The sweet spot depends on your scalp type, lifestyle, and the products you use.

If You Have an Oily Scalp

For clients who feel greasy by the next morning, washing every day or every other day works best. The trick is using a pH-balanced shampoo that cleans without over-stripping. Root lifters or lightweight foams can help extend freshness between washes, too.

If You Have a Dry or Flaky Scalp

Washing too often will only make dryness worse. I usually recommend two to three times per week with a hydrating, pH-balanced shampoo closer to 5.5. Adding a scalp treatment once a week can calm irritation and restore comfort.

If You Have Normal / Balanced Hair

Lucky you! Most of our Ramsey clients with balanced hair do well washing every three days. This keeps oil under control without over-drying. Many rotate between a gentle daily shampoo and a clarifying one once a week to keep their scalp and strands feeling fresh.

Consider Your Lifestyle

How often you work out, whether you live in humid weather, and even your job can change how often you need to wash. If you’re hitting the gym daily, a quick rinse or co-wash might work on off days instead of a full shampoo. In the summer, especially here near Ramsey Farmers Market and the outdoor events downtown, sweat and sunscreen often mean washing a little more frequently.

Stylist Quick Tips

  • Use dry shampoo sparingly—it’s a helper, not a replacement.
  • Always rinse thoroughly; leftover product can make hair dirtier faster.
  • Listen to your scalp: itchiness, flakes, or odor are signs you need a wash.

When in Doubt, Ask a Stylist

If you’re unsure whether you’re over- or under-washing, let us take a look. During a consultation, we’ll assess your scalp type, hair texture, and daily routine. Sometimes, all it takes is switching shampoos or adjusting your schedule by a day or two to completely change how your hair behaves.
